Writing in the Disciplines

Your answers should be typed in standard font size, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins and returned to me by email in docx or pdf format.  You have two essay options, but you must select only ONE.  Your essay must be about 600 words long (two pages).  You must also correctly quote whatever primary source you choose to write on from the prompts below.  Any use of outside secondary sources must be identified and included with your primary source in a Works Cited list at the end of your essay.  Any unidentified use of secondary sources will be deemed plagiarism and your essay will be rejected.

Essay Prompt 1:

Write an essay in which you discuss Surrealism as an avant-garde movement and, in particular, Andr Bretons surrealist agenda as laid out in his Surrealist Manifesto. What elements of Bretons program seem most typically avant-garde or modernist in your view?  Then discuss the film Un Chien Andalou by Luis Buuel and Salvador Dal as both an exemplary instance of Surrealist creativity but also as a surprisingly novel manifestation of surrealist endeavor.  You must incorporate at least one properly identified quotation from Bretons work and you must discuss at least two scenes from the film as illustrative examples.  Renato Poggiolis essay on the Avant-garde or the Bradbury MacFarlane essay on Modernism are recommended as secondary sources.
