Essay 2 Lens
You have done a close reading of Simone de Beauvoirs, Woman: Myth and Reality. Next, you will use some aspect of this text as a lens for analysis of a media text of your choice. You choose the medium- film, television, video, magazine, portrait, etc. You choose the time period- 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th wave. As a working strategy, brainstorm your initial analysis of your media text. Then outline the claims you intend to use from the theoretical text. Avoid summary of either one. Apply your theoretical text as a lens to your reading of your chosen media text to develop a deeper understanding of it.
Work closely with the texts, using them as evidence to support your claims and as material for further analysis. This essay should not be a matching exercise where you seek out only instances where the lens fits easily with the narrative. Elaborate on these instances, but you shouldnt ignore moments that might provide contradiction. Seek out differences. Feel free to challenge the limitations of the lens as you apply it to your text.
