Rampart CRASH Unit Article Review:

As Sheriff, based on the Rampart type scandal, I would implement the following changes to prevent a Rampart type scandal within my department. First, I would require a college degree or four of military service. College is not for everybody, but both allow a person to grow, mature, and require taking personal responsibility for ones actions. I would also scrutinize the applicants backgrounds more thoroughly. I would ensure that as part of the basic academys curriculum ethics are taught. I believe it is currently being taught, but for a limited time. I would dedicate a week or more on the subject, along with career survival, and share stories like the Rampart scandal. The class would document the slippery slope theory and evolution of noble cause corruption. Aside from telling recruits about the obvious pitfalls, I would go into detail about the monetary costs and the non-monetary such as an agency’s legitimacy. I would also educate recruits on department sub-groups or clicks, and the pitfalls associated with them. As part of recurring training after the academy, I would implement implicit biased, and de-escalation tactics at least once per calendar year. Both will ensure the department members are aware of and using force alternatives when appropriate and are mindful of the many cultures we serve.
