Race In Puerto Rican Society

Mestizaje implies racial mixture, its acceptance and thus the lack of racism in the society. Certainly this myth is present in Puerto Rican society. Using the readings by Godreau (Slippery semantics…), Godreau et al. (Lessons of slavery…) and Llorns et al. (Racismo en Puerto Rico: Surveying perceptions of racism) argue about the specificity of racial classification among Puerto Rico, the active presence of racism in Puerto Rico and how the ideology of mestizaje serves as a cover for denying its existence.
