Individual reflection

In the workplace, there are many situations where emotional intelligence is needed to ensure rational decisions are made. I got the chance to discover my EQI and explore the different subscales related to emotional intelligence. The EQI report helped me learn so much about my self-perception where my scores in emotional self-awareness and self-regard were in the high range. This shows that I respect myself and also understand my emotions better. This is a good thing as it helps ensure that I am able to regulate my emotions and make sure they do not interfere with my relationships in the workplace. I was not surprised by these results as they resonate with how I also interact with people outside the work environment; I always ensure I do not react when angry and always wait for when I am relaxed so that I can respond.

I also explored my stress management where the report says that being good at stress management means being able to deal with stressful situations and being able to have positive influence on the situations. I am very optimistic during stressful situations and I always feel that things will turn out well even during major setbacks. The report also talks about decision making which is the ability to make sound decisions where emotions are involved. Sometimes I let my emotions get the better of me and I find myself reacting in a very angered manner, I have noticed that this prevents me from thinking straight and hence affects my ability to make sound decisions. The report also talks about impulse control under decision making which is described as the ability to resist or delay an impulse; avoid rush behaviors and decision making. This is important since when I am angry I make decisions that I tend to regret later.

The other concept addressed in the report is self-expression and the results did not surprise me since I have always considered myself as an individual who knows how to say what I want and what my opinions are at any given time. Emotional intelligence involves being able to express self without making others feel bad about themselves. Looking at interpersonal skills, one of my highest sub scale was empathy which means that I am able to articulate how others feel. This is important as it helps me make sure that I treat people well.

From my report, the subscales which were higher than the others are empathy, emotional self-awareness, and reality testing. Reality testing means that instead of responding based on emotions and feelings, I always consider the facts and the data available when making decisions as a leader. Emotional self-awareness means that not only am I aware of my emotions, but am also aware of the triggers and this puts me in full control of how I react in situations and my responses. Empathy means that I can understand what others feel and I feel that this is an important thing as it helps make sure that I have healthy relationships.

Apart from the highly scored sub-scales, there are three areas where I am not doing well and I need to improve. First, I scored a very low score on emotional expression and I intend to improve this by expressing my emotions more. I have always avoided this for the fear that people will not understand me. I also need to improve on my independence and I will achieve this through avoiding being so reliant on others. Flexibility is another area where I need to improve; I like certainty so much and hence stick to methods I have used before. I will be more flexible If I embraces taking risks and trying new things. Learning about my EQI was a very goo thing and I will use the results to make me a better leader.
