Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol(DHCP)

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is the protocol used to assign IP addresses

to network devices. No two network devices can have the same IP address. In a large

network, without DHCP, it would be a lot of work to manage the distribution and

assignment of IP addresses.

DHCP automates the assignment of IP addresses by having a central server that keeps all

of the available IP addresses to be distributed and “leases” them out to the network

devices as they come online and request an address.

Along with "leasing" IP addresses, a DHCP server can also provide other network

configuration information such as the default gateway and DNS server addresses.
