Domain Name System (DNS)Network devices have addresses, usually in the form of IP addresses. In IPv4, the IP
addresses are in the form of four octets (w.x.y.z). IPv6 is even more complicated, as it is a
longer sequence of hexadecimals. Because of the need for people to access a network
device’s address and the difficulty in memorizing or remembering numerical IP addresses,
the Domain Name System (DNS) was introduced.
Think of DNS as the phone directory of the internet. We don’t usually remember
everybody’s phone number, but we remember names. When we need to call a person, we
look up the phone number in a directory using that person’s name. This is how DNS
works.
A DNS server maintains the mapping information between domain names and IP
addresses. Network devices (and users) can query DNS servers to get this information.
