Characteristics Of Nursing Research Utilization And Evidence-Based Practice

Due to the availability of research-based investigations, nurses can now be provided with a way to apply scientifically proven and critically appraised evidence to deliver outstanding health care to a specific population. Research based practice can potentially influence and enhance clinical care and provide better patient care. At my workplace nurses mix the superlative available technology and science into their practice to work from a holistic and patient centered approach. Nurses apply evidence-based practices by reviewing and assessing the most up to date and highest quality investigations to help them in offering adequate care. Patients values and beliefs are well observed and as they are well included in their treatment plan. We also endeavor to involve the family in the care of their loved one as much as the patient is comfortable, this improves patient care delivery by weighing experiences and preferences of patients individually. Nurses implement EPB in helping them making better care decisions which will in turn save their time, since it helps them not to engage in activities that are of no benefit to the patients. By generally implementing EBP the nurses have increased their confidence and decision-making skills. Example of some EBP practices being followed at my hospital include the use of Foley catheters where necessary and removing it per protocol if its purpose has been fulfilled to avoid catheter associated infections. The proper maintenance of infections control measures to avoid hospital related acquired infections. We practice proper peripheral IV insertion site management to avoid complications. Significant complications related to the presence of a peripheral intravenous site include localized infection, bacteremia, phlebitis, and infiltration or extravasation. Consistent application of evidence-based standards of practice in all aspects of peripheral intravenous catheter care is essential to provide infusion therapy that delivers safe and quality care. (Nickel, 2019). involvement of patients in their care and respecting their treatment choices. We value the role and presence of family members, this due to the recognition that family involvement might lead to more effective and efficient patient care and proper management during and after hospitalization. Managers always encourages nurses to keeps themselves updated about new scientific and medical protocols for patient care, thus they can improve the chances of patient recovery. We also practice teamwork and involve all medical inter professional team necessary in the care of patients to provide holistic care approach, for example physicians, Chaplains, nutritionist, occupational therapist and physical therapist to mention a few. Physical therapy assists patients to achieve safe and effective mobility during hospitalization, collaboration with patients and the inter-professional team. Early mobility can enhance care environments and patients outcomes greatly. (Schreiber, 2021).

However, evidence-based research (EBP) has a lot of heavy workloads attached to it, hence many nurses find it difficult to keep up to date with new evidence. Many nurses also require some mentoring as most of them only possess mediocre level of skills regarding self-efficacy of research-based practices related abilities. The top three obstacles to implementing and applying evidence-based practice is failure to understand the statistical terms, lack of time and lack of understanding the vernacular applied in the investigation articles. So basic training and mentoring by fellow nurses with evidence-based practice can help and encourage them to apply and implement evidence-based practice.
