Lab 6 – let’s talk about results

YOU WILL ONLY NEED SPSS TO CREATE A FEW FIGURES FOR THIS LAB. THE RESULTS SECTION CAN BE WRITTEN BELOW. THIS DOCUMENT IS THE ONLY THING YOU NEED TO TURN IN.

For this lab you will be writing a results section based on ONE of the two data sets we’ve analyzed (lab 3 – the sound of intellect OR lab 4 – infections and elections). You must include results 3 different analyses and 3 figures for each of those analyses. Below is an outline of what the results section should look like.

Results

The first paragraph will include general details about the data and your analyses. Mainly answering the following questions:

1. Are the data normal? What types of tests did we use if data are or are not normal?

2. What software did we use to analyze the data?

3. If we did t-tests, are they one- or two-sided?

4. If we did correlations, did we use Pearson or Spearman?

5. What is the significance threshold set to?

6. If figures have error bars, what do they represent? (95% CIs or SEM?)

The second paragraph will include all of the fun stats from the analyses you’ve done. First begin the paragraph with the big picture question. What are we hoping to answer with all of these tests? Then walk through each of the three analyses, explaining what particular question each of them answered and what the answer is. The paragraph should follow this template:

1. What big picture question should this entire results section answer?

2. First analysis

a. What small question should the first analysis answer?

b. What test did you use to answer this question?

c. What is the answer to that question (include stats here)?

d. Include a reference to a figure as well.

3. Second analysis

a. What small question should the second analysis answer?

b. What test did you use to answer this question?

c. What is the answer to that question (include stats here)?

d. Include a reference to a figure as well.

4. Third analysis

a. What small question should the third analysis answer?

b. What test did you use to answer this question?

c. What is the answer to that question (include stats here)?

d. Include a reference to a figure as well.

Include all figures on a separate page. Each figure must have a figure caption explaining what is in the figure.
